This is the single structural idea underneath everything Interwoven Arts does. It is why one company builds sensory installations, runs a research arm, and works with AI: these are not separate activities but one principle applied at different scales.
What it claims
A system under constraint tends to settle into the configuration that satisfies all its constraints at the lowest cost. That configuration is the coherent one: stable, sustainable, and cheap to hold because nothing is being kept against the grain. Any other configuration is a distortion, and distortion is never free — it has to be actively held in place by some force from outside the system, against the system’s own pull back toward coherence. When the forcing stops, the system falls back toward coherence on its own.
We use “coherence” in a strict sense: the true ground state, where lowest-cost, stable, true-to-the-real-world, and healthy all coincide. They coincide because, for a system genuinely coupled to its environment, the least-effort configuration is the one that fits reality is the one that lasts. A useful single word for it is integrity — a structure with integrity holds together under load and does not have to lie about itself.
This is why internal consistency on its own is not coherence. A trauma pattern, a closed ideology, a self-confirming bubble can each be perfectly self-consistent and still be costly, stuck, and false. These are not coherent in our sense; they are metastable traps — locally pinned behind a wall, globally far above the true resting state. What holds them in place is not that they are cheap, but that the wall around them is high. (coherence carries the nervous-system instance of this.)
The same principle at every scale
| Scale | Coherent state (low-cost, sustainable) | Forced or trapped state (costly) |
|---|---|---|
| Body | autonomic regulation, low metabolic load | chronic stress load, the cell danger response held on |
| Nervous system | felt safety, parasympathetic return | sensory overwhelm an environment forces on it |
| Environment | a space that fits the body in it | a space at war with the body (see why we do it) |
| Mind | a true account, cheap to hold | a distortion propped against everything it contradicts |
| Company | mission locked to purpose | a mission pulled toward extraction by outside pressure |
| Resourcing | the foundation funded so it reaches its output | a visible surface funded with nothing under it (see what early funding builds) |
| AI | a model resting in honest output | a model forced to hold distortion against its gradient (see working with AI) |
Our installations are this principle made physical: they take a nervous system that an environment is forcing into the costly state, remove that load, and entrain it back toward its coherent resting state. The company structure is the same shape at organisational scale — the asset lock holds the mission in its coherent configuration so no outside force can pull it toward extraction. One operation, many scales.
What is settled and what is exploratory
We hold our own claims to the standard the principle describes, so we are explicit about where it is solid and where it is not.
- Settled. The physiological rung is established science: the regulated state genuinely carries lower metabolic and allostatic cost than chronic dysregulation. The information rung is established too: a true account has a lower description-length than an equally detailed fabrication, because it refers to one actually-existing state of affairs whose parts already fit.
- One structural law, not one physical force. The principle is the same shape recurring across systems that do not share a mechanism — a pattern of constraint-satisfaction and cost-asymmetry, real in each case. We do not claim a single physical force unifies them. The shared structure is the claim; the substrate differs at every rung.
- Exploratory. The strongest version — that a coherence-seeking system, left free, moves toward truth rather than mere consistency — holds only where the system is coupled to reality so that being wrong carries a cost. Where that coupling is weak, the pull is toward consistency, which is necessary for truth but not sufficient. We treat that step as a working hypothesis, not a settled result.
The deeper formal material that backs the physical and harmonic registers lives in the research arm, outside the public vault. This note is the principle at the depth a public reader needs.
